Hydraulic Seals for Improving the Performance of Hydraulic Cylinders

A hydraulic seal is one of the most important components of hydraulic cylinders. The typical function of the seals is to prevent hydraulic fluid leakage from the cylinder. By doing so, the seals effectively rule out the need for replacing or rebuilding a damaged cylinder. They also keep foreign materials such as dirt, dust, weld flash, metallic chips, and moisture from entering the hydraulic system. Moreover, they are able to withstand extreme temperatures, high pressures, and transverse forces within the hydraulic cylinder.

Enhanced Performance and Durability with Hydraulic Seals

Often, a combination of specialized seals is used to seal hydraulic systems. The following seals aid in the efficient performance of a hydraulic system:

  • Rod Seals:These are used to prevent the leakage of lubricants from the cylinder.
  • Piston Seals:These seals help in preventing the lubricant from flowing across the cylinder head. These allow pressure to build up within the piston, thus allowing the cylinder to extend or retract.
  • Wear Rings:They guide the piston and piston rod within the cylinder. While doing so, the rings absorb the transverse forces, and prevents metal-to-metal contact.
  • Wiper Seals:Also called wipers or scrapers, these prevent dirt, chips, and moisture from entering the piston rods, as they retract into the hydraulic cylinder. This in turn prevents fluid contamination.

Types of Hydraulic Seals Based on their Work Principle

Based on their operating principles, hydraulic seals are categorized into two types:

  • Dynamic Seal: A dynamic seal is installed within the inner shaft of the hydraulic cylinder. It can ideally withstand the movement against its internal opening.
  • Static Seal: This is a non-moving seal that is fitted within the grooves of a hydraulic system. The stationary mounting design gives this seal the capacity to endure large amounts of pressure.

These days, manufacturers also provide custom manufactured hydraulic seals to suit specific application needs. So, if you have an application that can be solved or improved by installing a hydraulic seal, consult a manufacturer today.
